Falling Water
September 1, 2022 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us at FoR Fine Art in Whitefish for the opening reception of Kathleen Hudson’s solo show “Falling Water” from 6pm to 9pm – featuring live music from Cara Alboucq, refreshments, and a new body of work from Kathleen!
Kathleen Hudson emphasizes dynamic light and atmosphere in her paintings. She is a Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America and the second youngest artist ever to be elected a Fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists. In 2017, Hudson received the Grand Prize in the 6th Annual PleinAir Salon for her painting Bright Morning, Timberline Falls, which was featured on the July 2017 cover of PleinAir Magazine. The same month Southwest Art named her an “Artist to Watch.”
Artist Statement:
“In my work I tread a line between what is real and what seems otherworldly. I try to find points of unearthly beauty in shifting atmospherics and light upon the landscape, rare moments of vision that elevate a conventionally beautiful subject into something moving and ethereal. In this body of work, I wanted to explore that idea in a unified way. I opted to do a deep dive into the subject of waterfalls.
Waterfalls lend themselves to dramatic contrasts, atmospheric movement, and shimmering light. Many of these falls represent places that can be found as close as Glacier Park and as far away as Zimbabwe. A couple of the pieces came from studies of imaginary falls—as much time as I’ve spent painting falls on location, I’ve learned to anticipate how the colors in the mist shift with the sun’s angle and understand how wet rocks reflect nearby light sources.
One of my favorite things about painting waterfalls on location is the sound that falling water makes. Depending on the height and flow rate, a waterfall can fill your ears with either a thundering roar or a joyful burble and splash. I aim to paint waterfalls in such a way that this immersive painting experience carries through. If these pieces feel true to their subject, they’ll summon the sense of watching water cascade down a cliffside: the sound, the feel of the mist, all of it. May they bring you joy.”
