Framing Basics: Types of Glazing

March 16th, 2023

What is glazing?

Glazing is a term used for both glass and acrylic to describe the transparent covering that plays a key role in protecting artwork from dust, moisture, temperature change, and physical damage.

Acrylic used by framers and galleries has UV-filtering characteristics and a scratch resistant coating so it doesn’t haze or mar. We recommend it for larger pieces, as it is shatter resistant and lighter than glass.

UV Glass used by framers and galleries is not much more expensive than plain glass or acrylic, so we highly recommend it for most framing projects!

Museum Glass is an anti-reflective glazing that has a coating that minimizes reflection, similar to quality eyeglasses. It is available in both glass and acrylic, and we use it on everything in the gallery that has glazing.
